I didn't learn any of this from a textbook. I learned it by getting it wrong, repeatedly,
across six businesses of my own — in beauty, home, pets, children's media, coffee and
fine art.
I priced my first products by looking at what other people charged. I absorbed shipping to
stay competitive without ever working out what it cost me. For two years I didn't count my
own time at all — which meant my most popular product was quietly my least profitable one,
and I had no idea.
I built a storefront, drove traffic to it, and watched almost nothing sell. I spent weeks
blaming my marketing before finding that several products were showing as sold out while
the stock sat in the back room.
I carried inventory I couldn't shift because I'd ordered on optimism. I ran sales that felt
generous and left me worse off. I paid myself last, and often not at all, and told myself
that was what building looked like.
Every calculator in Bankable exists because I needed it and couldn't find it. Each one
answers a question that had already cost me money.
My most popular product was quietly my least profitable one — and I had no idea.
